My sense of smell is quite highly developed. Some might even say, it’s more developed than my common sense. Ha! I’m like the daughter Jean-Baptiste Grenouille never had. I can discern smells quite swiftly and accurately and I love it. Especially as it’s the sense most closely associated with memory . . . Sometimes all it takes is one breath and I’m reliving something beautiful like an Eid feast from my childhood or an embrace with a loved one. However, I am quite sensitive to smells and that makes me have very volatile reactions to some. This fragility means my tastes and reactions are serious AF! Especially when it comes to what I wear.
My olfactory palette is quite basic – musky, citrusy, fruity, (light) woody. Anything prominently floral or oriental and it’s a horrid headache or nausea or both. Sometimes, I even swoon. You can read all about my dramatic experiences with strong scents here. I just loooove yummy fragrances from my shower gels that resemble deserts to body butters that I could just *JD (Scrubs) daydream voice* “smear on a bagel!” to my beloved perfume, deo and body splashes. The top trifecta in my humble collection is always: Dior, Chanel and Versace. Never fail to have at least one of each. None of the strong ones like No. 5 please. I respect it in spirit and legacy but I just cannot handle it! So, before I ramble on and on and on . . . here is my current perfume collection.
Versace Pour Femme
Yes, it’s classified as floral, and contains lilacs and orchids in its bouquet (double entendre score!) but somehow, I fell so in love with this one. Love at first whiff almost a decade ago and I have never looked back since . . . but I have looked . . . for it . . . hard! It is quite rare to find for some reason and once took me about 5 years before I could get it in a store here in Kenya. It’s so sophisticated, sultry and sexy. And it seems to be unforgettable too. People always ask me about it like “Oshin, that perfume you had on during . . . what’s it called again? It was amazing!” 🙂
Another longtime lover. Such a beauty with confident citrus notes that are unmissable thanks to the lemon abundant in it (along with pink pepper, pineapple and others). I’ve tried all the variants of Chance, and I keep going back to the one in the pink box. I actually smile whenever I smell it. It just makes me feel happy, confident and sweet whenever I have it on. Joie de vivre. Like my chance is tres bon!
This is one of those fruity gems that I’m glad I got introduced to. Features delish strawberry a clean musk. *Deep breath* aaaaah! The kind of scent that I imagine signifies young adulthood, femininity and a little n0n-threating pride. I find it quite seductive, playful and captivating.
*** NB. I prefer the older Miss Dior to Miss Dior Cherie.
Versace Bright Crystal
My baby! 🙂 Oh so fruity! I mean, with a prominence of pomegranates, what do you expect? So fun and flirty and delicious and zesty. Just beautiful and soft but very present. It has been my daily scent for a while now. Cannot get enough of it! Although, that hasn’t always been the case . . . I had to take a “gap year” because at some point in the past I broke a bottle of this and in my desperation/panic I took whatever remained in a chunk of the broken bottle and poured it on my hair. Let’s just say, I was engulfed and devoured and regurgitated by this scent. I ended up hating it for the overwhelming amount I had on and could not stand it for months after I finally washed it all off. Haha. There can be too much of a good thing!
See, I used and fell for the Eau Delice and Eau Fraiche variants so I decided to get the Eau de toilette and I ended up not liking it as much as its fruity cousins. It’s more oriental floral although quite light for such. I cannot comfortably wear it without feeling suffocated, slightly headachey and nauseated during the opening but by dry down, it is something I can love. If the Jasmine just muted faster. The other variants always made me feel cute and like anything is possible . . . adventurous! This one . . . not my cup of tea.
Coco Chanel Mademoiselle
What can I say about this woody wonder? J’adore (not the Dior). It is so classy! Period! I won’t post the near empty bottle as I’m still holding on to whatever little is left. Restock soon! For when the Queen comes to Kenya and I have to meet her over some high tea. We’ll talk about the weather, family, the good ol’ days, ideologies and exchange compliments J
I got this one as a gift from my cousin because I could smell it off her and it was fantastic! Pineapples! Pineapples everywhere! And then I saw the bottle and I had to have it. Floral fruity and just damn sweet! Now I need some pineapple rings or juice or sorbet!
Like most of you, I’m sure, I have a Victoria’s Secret and/or Body shop mist/body splash at all times because they are so divine and last sooooooooooooooooooo long! Plus they mingle well with their lotions and bath products. Always a win.
I obviously love a more flirty and fun scent and I bet by now you can tell I’m habitual in my choices as I’ve been dedicated to a lot of these for many many years now. I can’t say I have a signature scent yet . . . you know, that one that is synonymous with my presence and style. I decide what perfume to wear based on the mood I’m in (or even want to be in), the weather, and occasion and that means a lot of switching. So I can’t choose just a one for now, but if I absolutely had to I would say Versace Pour Femme. That says everything from top to tail that I would want to say about myself without uttering a single word: bold, sensual, intriguing and refined.
So, that’s my current perfume collection. Absolutely scent from heaven. Hoping to experiment outside of my comfort zone and try something new for a change. Soon. Maybe. J What’s in your collection? Do you have a signature scent? Share!
