When I was a child, I used to marvel at women and their dressing tables. Whether in the movies or my mum, aunts and older cousins. It just seemed like this throne for dames, where beauty and glamour happen. The home of red lipstick, face powder, lotions and perfume. The place I first met YSL, Chanel, Givenchy, Oil of Ulan and Ulay (before they became Olay) and other loves that have stayed with me. I used to play on my mum’s or just stare at her getting dolled up and thought of the days ahead when I would have my own vanity space . . .
I finally did (just the table, custom made after a simple design I saw online) and I realized there are so many different things I could use it for and different ways I could dress it up, so I decided to share my three faves here!
THE BOOK LOVER
I love books. I cannot stress that enough. I have books and stationery lying around all over the place and if you’re like me, and need a nice space to organize your stash, a dressing table can be the perfect place. For this look I had my mirror (bought separately) laid horizontally against the wall, mounted my cute reading lamp and a sweet flower arrangement (in a giant teacup y’all!) then arranged some books and my ideas notebooks and voila!
THE RUSTIC LOVER
Few things look as pretty as a mash up of furniture and earthy accents. I absolutely adore rustic looks and for this one I mounted a different mirror in brown framing (also bought separately), a vintage looking banana box to store makeup/jewelry and some miniature tin lanterns, a wooden jewelry box I bought raw in Lamu (sanded, varnished and accentuated with gold by myself), a lovely warm yellow flower vase avec dried coloured stalks and feathers and completed the ensemble with an assortment of energy stones and some dried Moroccan roses. Beautiful!
THE GLAMOUR LOVER
Sometimes a girl just needs some glam in her life! Some sparkle and fabulosity. Which, let’s face it, is the essence of a dressing table anyway. So for this look I basically went back to my childhood obsession with a dresser full of cute little beauty essentials (although I stash my makeup in the pull out drawers) and pretty shiny trinkets. First of all, I loooooove this “disco ball” styled glass and ceramic oval tray I got a while back, and I arranged my scents and a few Swarovski boxes on it. I also stacked up my glass and chrome vintage looking jewelry box duo, glass spice jars that I converted into coll cotton balls and earbud containers, Moroccanesque miniature lanterns in pretty reds and blues, candles and my favorite piece of all – a crystal sugar bowl full of fake diamonds and chocolate for that midnight sugar craving. Yumm!
The beauty about a dressing table and the best decor for it is that you get to make it whatever you like! Go crazy and try different styles or a combo of several, whatever you do, just have fun an d be authentic to the you of the moment. Enjoy!
