Am I the only one who’s never pleased by a single eyeshadow palette? There’s always something wrong. The ones with all the amazing colours are too big to carry around. The smaller ones have some crucial shades missing and like 50% of shades I never use. And even when I get one that’s the right size and shade range, there’s the problem of not having enough shimmer or enough matte in the colours I need. Ugh! So frustrating. But I learned that some makeup brands give us the freedom to build custom palettes! How bomb is that? So I went to MAC to try and build my own Oshinity palette.
I went in with the intention of getting a 4 piece palette but the prices at the store were about double of what was on the website for the eyeshadow pans so I had to cut down to a 2 piece palette. I spent some time swatching the shades I wanted for my ideal palette and settled on Embark and Amber Lights. Embark is a cool-tone deep brown matte shadow that would be great as a base, crease and smokey colour. Amber Lights is a perfectly shimmery copper gold warm-tone that applies and blends smoothly and is perfect as a lid and accent shade. I got these two because they look good both individually and together and I could get several looks from them.
The beauty about custom palettes is just that: they’re customized by you for you. Yes, they cost more than pre-made palettes available at the stores, but they’re worth it because they are unique to you and your individual style and needs. They’re also very wearable because the colours are what you want so there’s usually little to no wastage or buyers remorse 🙂 And it’s buildable: you can start small (like I have) and take your time to grow it slow and steady. You can get the bigger cases and get eyeshadow pans to fill it up gradually. MAC have palettes from 2 pans to 30 pans so you can go as big as your pockets allow. The actual palettes have different prices depending on the sizes and the eyeshadow pans go for KShs. 2,000 ($20) here which is expensive.
You can also get concealer shades as well and mix and match them with eyeshadows or just have them by themselves. There are options for blushes too. Other brands that offer the same are Anastasia Beverly Hills and Inglot to name a few. So if this is something that you have been interested in, I hope this has helped.
