My bedroom makeover has been a passion project I’ve been meaning to undertake for a long time. I never really liked what it was before. It was mismatched and impersonal. Just a place I rested my weary body in, not a space I enjoyed and felt reflected who I am, and more importantly, who I want to be. Sure, I had some decals on the wall and got myself a dressing table to try and make it more me but it still looked and felt off. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to see and feel in my bedroom and I also got some ideas from Pinterest so I got cracking and transformed my once bland and incoherent bedroom to the intimate space I needed it to be.

I initially planned on having a fuchsia or black feature wall with strong fuchsia accents in the bedding and curtains. However, the introvert in me (yes, I’m secretly introverted) needed a very soft and tranquil, almost dreamy ambiance. Something that could easily be dressed up or down depending on my mood. So I had to go white! I repainted my walls white and had my brown bed and cream doors and wardrobes all painted white as well. I believe this is a great blank canvas that I can work with if my taste changes in future and doesn’t limit my options. I also decided to get rid of the busy curtains in favour of brilliant white sheers that really give the room a nice airy feel and bring in so much wonderful natural lighting. I love it. I got white bedding (no more obnoxiously bright red and yellow blanket!) and some very beautiful mix-and-matched pillows: white and black, silver and gold mermaid pillows and this huge fluffy pink throw pillow that I love to itty bitty bits. I included a black throw as an accent piece just to add some boldness to the bed. To add to the light an airy ambiance and some character, I got some beautiful black 3D butterfly stickers above my headboard. These are so beautiful and fun and girly. I had shared a sneak peak with my friend Idil who loved them so much she went ahead and got them too as part of her own bedroom makeover.

I redid the dressing table as well but not too much. I wanted it simple and elegant so I just left the cute little metallic and glass trays, my perfume, the glass and chrome jewelry boxes and my bedside lamp on it. I decided to have a flower vase to add some life and a pop of colour that just makes it all look vibrant and chic. I replaced my old stool with a simple gold iron legged, fur topped one that makes me feel so luxurious. I also mounted a huge mirror on one wall which really opens up the room and makes it look so much bigger and of course, now I can enjoy dressing up and a good night time dance party for one 🙂 Who doesn’t like dancing in front of a mirror? I like the way the little faux fur carpets look under the stool and in front of the mirror with my most frequently worn shoes. Just adds some gorgeous feels.

Since my dressing table is too small to hold all my junk without it looking like a mess, and I needed something to go in the corner by the foot of the bed, I reckoned a corner shelf would be ideal. I found one I simply adored on Organized Planet but it was sold out and shipping it in from Amazon was too expensive so I had my fundi (carpenter) make it for me. Love it! It has given me space to stack up my bric-a-brac and looks very nice, completing the room. For the wall next to the shelf, I got a lovely Chanel Chance (one of my all time fave perfumes) watercolour print online and had it framed. And finished off the foot of the bed with a white washed traditional African stool I have loved since childhood. I use that to place my throw pillows and clothes when going to bed.
I’m very pleased with my finished work. My bedroom now reflects my style and my mindset and feels like home. I wanna spend every moment in there just chilling, reading, writing, doing my makeup – you name it. It’s my little sanctuary.
This makeover has left me feeling fulfilled and serene. It’s amazing what a makeover can do for the mind. And now that my personal space looks and feels right, ’tis time to makeover other aspects of my life in line with my life plans and goals. I hope this post inspires some of you to do your own makeovers in case that’s something you too have been meaning to do. There’s so much inspiration out there on Instagram and Pinterest and YouTube. A plethora of DIY hacks are also available. It doesn’t have to cost so much, just invest in the basic pieces and work with what you have to make your space work for you. Have a grand week!
