As a woman of colour, nude nail polish was never something I thought I could pull off. None of the 50 shades of beige (that we were always force fed as nude) were ever quite right. Between shades looking casket ready and sickly on my skin, my only nude nail polish options were the barely there French manicure base coats. Meh! But nowadays brands are woke to the full spectrum that nude is and we have all kinds of WOC friendly nude nail polish colors to choose from. A brand I’ve always loved as far as pricing, quality, colours and finishes and that’s readily available everywhere in Kenya is Luron. And they have got some of my favorite nude nail polish shades for medium to dark skin so here are my top four.
Soft Pearly Brown – Shade 92
This is a very beautiful light and soft brown colour. It’s got a hint of what looks like slightly pink or reddish shimmers that make it the most gorgeous tone. It appears sheer on initial application which gives a modest and elegant look. When you layer more coats it becomes this beautiful pearly pale brown with a pinkiness that’s understated and adorable. I love this shade because it’s great for an everyday look but can also glam up an ensemble when it’s built up to the pearliness. Soft glam through and through.
Rosey Mauve – Shade 32
Some of my favourite kinds of nudes fall under the mauve and dusty rose hues. Especially for dark skin. There’s a blushy flattery they give that I can never get enough of. This nail polish colour fits that bill perfectly. It’s flirty, sweet and adds a little bit of sass to neutral with it’s lovely mauve colour and opaque finish. One coat is all it takes to get a fantastic completed look. Of course you can layer it to a more vibrant appearance if you like. Over the last couple of years I have worn this shade religiously and I never tire of it.
Tan Chocolate – Shade 115
Such a true neutral for dark skin, this one. A gorgeous milk chocolate brown with tan . . . Almost a little taupe but not too cool as not to be neutral. It’s a statement colour and yet nude. I love it because it’s so close to my complexion that it manages to give my fingers the illusion of length – ideally what a perfect nude should accomplish as far as nail polish and shoes. One application of this is enough as it too dries down to an opaque yet glossy finish. This is such a bomb boss tone that looks clean cut, polished (pun not intended lol) and posh.
Deep Brown – Shade 36
Decadent. Delicious. Divine. This deep moody brown is so rich and yummy that I find myself staring at my nails often whenever I wear it. This is the shade you wear when you want to switch it up and go bold but still maintain the neutral style. It’s a power colour. One that exudes sultry mystery and sexiness. I am obsessed with it. It applies opaque with beautiful gloss in one coat. If I you could only get one shade from these four, I suggest you make it this one. Thank me later.
If you’re a WOC looking to rock some nude nails, I hope this helps. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find what best compliments your complexion and your mood. As you can see in my pictures, I really was in a different mood in each shade. And I paired them with similar nude lip colours which are another favourite to wear for me (check out my YouTube video on my top nude lipsticks here). Luron nail polishes are available at nearly all supermarkets and lots of pharmacies at about KShs. 110 ($1.10) which is such a steal! As you can So go on, get nude!
